Pieces of Elsewhere

Artist Name(s) Ian Wilson
Artwork title Pieces of Elsewhere
Context/Background Pieces of Elsewhere was commissioned by Sligo County Council in 2005 and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government Per Cent for Art Scheme. It is one of ten projects within Unravelling Developments 2004-2006, commissioned by Sligo Local Authorities. In this commission the composer, Ian Wilson, created a new piece of music that was presented through specially designed listening posts located throughout Sligo town and offering a different type of engagement with contemporary music for public audiences.

Description

The composer's idea was to write music that would be contemplative and atmospheric in mood, allowing the listener to step outside their familiar surroundings for a brief moment and imagine beyond their immediate urban environment. Setting seventeen haiku, a Japanese poetic form, to music for voice and percussion. The work was recorded in the Royal Irish Academy of Music in June 2005 and an edition of one thousand CDs is just released. The public sampled this work when they encountered some curious objects located in the town. These 'listening posts', specially designed and created by second year students of industrial design at Sligo Institute of Technology, played the seventeen settings one at a time when activated by a member of the public.Pieces of Elsewhere was written for soprano, Natalie Raybould and the RIAM Percussion Ensemble with texts translated from Japanese Haiku by Sam Hamill.

Mediation

The work was recorded in the Royal Irish Academy of Music in June 2005 and one thousand special edition CDs were released.
