Scoil Mhuire, Lucan, Co Dublin seeks to commission an artist to work with the children on an outdoor sculpture. Budget; €28,000. Deadline 16/01/15

“Learning Outside” Artist’s Brief

Scoil Mhuire is a co-educational primary school in Lucan with just over 400 children and 25 staff. The school was founded in 1984, and has recently undergone an extensive building programme.

While we are a Catholic school, we have children enrolled from many different parts of the world with many different faiths, all of which are respected and celebrated.

There is a great sense of co-operation in Scoil Mhuire – between the children, the staff and the children, and the staff and the parents

The school website www.scoilmhuire.ie gives a good insight into the unique characteristics of the school.

The school prides itself on its commitment to sport and creativity. Drama and music are very important in Scoil Mhuire, and the school would like this to be reflected in any submission by an artist. It is also essential that the children are involved in some aspect of the work.

The budget for the project is to up to €28,000

Prospective applicants are invited to view the site from now up to December 12th 2014

Please ring 00. 353. 1. 6240203 to make an appointment.

The closing date for applications is January 16, 2015.

The Board of Management of Scoil Mhuire will draw up a short list from the applicants, who may then be called to an interview to answer questions on their proposal.

Below are aspects to be included in the design;

* Having consulted with the children they have recommended that we have something uniquely Irish in the newly designed learning space.

* The design must be site specific, and be sympathetic to the local geographical and historic context, with reference to local heritage.

Some points about the site;

* The site is an enclosed courtyard garden measuring 14.8m x 8m.

* At present it is divided into 4 quarters, with mature trees/shrubbery in 3 and a pond with a fountain in the other.

* The clearance of the trees/shrubbery will be included in the plan from the artist.

* The height of the boundary/enclosing wall is 3.3m

* At either end of the space is a set of double doors and a window each side of each door.

* On either side there are 4 windows measuring 2.5m x 1.6m

* These windows are from corridors which have classrooms on the other side of the corridor.
