The Silver

Artist Name(s) Martina Coyle
Artwork title The Silver
Description

Martina Coyle, an artist from the Mayo County Council artist's panel, was commissioned to produce a site responsive artwork in the Erris area. After an initial research period living and exploring Erris, Coyle returned to Mayo to spend four months in residence in the Blacksod area early in 2006. Coyle's approach to creating The Silver was holistic, with consideration of location, history, language, (being a Gaeltacht region) and integration with the local community, all being paramount in the process to ensure a site sensitive artwork. In Coyle's own words 'change and the local must be at the heart of it'. In response to her time in the area, Martina produced a time-based intervention and installation that is drawn from the actual and historical aspects of the Mullet peninsula, the Inish Kea Islands and its inhabitants. The work consisted of a four screen video installation and a sound piece.

Filmed in 'real-time', The Silver focuses on the sun-set off An Fal Mor could be read as a large still life photograph. In the film the landscape gradually changes with multifarious variations in light and the slow movement of clouds, and setting the pace of The Silver. Juxtaposed to this are three other video pieces, two, filming the movement of boats between the Islands and the mainland and the third representing presence on the Island. Coyle aims to capture the psyche of place and of the people through generations attuned to the minute changes in the light and the elements. There is a mesmeric rhythmic feel to the work, setting a quiet melodic pace,a feeling of time passing and of the inextricable continuity of life in this exposed and isolated peninsula. The reflective mood is enhanced by a soundtrack of voices from the community, oral recordings using the Irish language as testimony of distinctive speech rhythms and place names particular to the locale.

The Silver – Irish Translation

Fearas físeáin cheithre scáthlán agus ball fuaimeRinneadh coimisiúnú ar Mhartina Coyle, ealaíontóir ó phainéal Ealaíontóirí Chomhairle Chontae Mhaigh Eo, chun saothar ealaíona suíomh-mhothálach a sholáthar i gceantar Iorrais. Tar éis tréimhse thosaigh taighde ag cónaí agus ag taiscéaladh in Iorras, d'fhill Martina chun cónaitheacht 4 mhí a chaitheamh ar an bhFód Dubh go luath i 2006. Bhí cur chuige Mhartina iomlánaíoch i nádúr. Bhí áireamh an ionaid, stair an cheantair, teanga (ar a bheith ina réigiún Gaeltachta) agus comhtháiteacht leis an bpobal áitiúil fíor thábhachtach sa bpróiseas chun saothar ealaíona suíomh-mhothálach a chinntiú.

??I bhfocail Mhartina fhéin, 'change and the local must be at the heart of it'. Ag éirí as a cuid ama sa gceantar, chuir Martina eadráin agus fearas am-bhunaithe ar fáil a baineadh as gnéithe réalaíocha agus stairiúla leithinis an Mhuirthead, Oileáin Inis Gé agus a lucht cónaithe. Arna scannánú i 'bhfíor-am', d'fhéadfadh dul faoi na gréine amach ón bhFál Mór a bheith le feiceáil mar ghrianghraf mór marbh, ach le linn duit a bheith ag breathnú. tagann athrú de réir a chéile ar an tírdhreach le malartuithe ilchineálacha i soilsiú agus i ngluaiseacht mhall scamall, ar an gcaoi sin ag leagan síos ráta gluaiseachta 'The Silver'.

Lena ais seo tá trí phíosa eile físeáin, dhá cheann ag scannánú gluaiseacht bhád idir na hoileáin agus Tír Mór agus an tríú ceann ag léiriú beochta ar an oileán. Cuireann Martina roimpi sícé áite agus dhaoine a cheapadh trí ghlúine i gcomhréir leis na hathruithe bídeacha san solas agus sna heilimintí. Tá mothú rithimiúil dolbhaireach leis an saothar, ag leagan síos gluaiseacht chiúin shéiseach, mothú am á chaitheamh agus leanúnachas dofhuascailte saoil ins an leithinis seo gan chosaint agus iargúlta. Cuirtear leis an bhfonn meabhraitheach seo le fuaimrian glórtha ón bpobal, taifid bhéil ag úsáid na teanga Ghaeilge mar fhianaise ar rithimí faoi leith cainte agus ar logainmneacha sonrach don gceantar.
