SKY 1-32

Artist Name(s) Michael Durand
Artwork title SKY 1-32
Context/Background SKY 1-32 was a commission funded by public donations to Medical 4, the oncology ward of Waterford Regional Hospital. It was exhibited in the day ward, the corridors and single and double rooms of the hospital.

Description

Sky 1-32 is a series of 32 photographic images presented as ceiling light boxes and  large scale vinyl and framed prints situated throughout the oncology ward, Medical 4, of Waterford Regional Hospital. The work looks at the beauty of the natural world, travel and flight. The aspiration was to create uniformity and allow a space for contemplation in what can be a stressful environment.

The ceiling pieces were photographed from ground level while the vinyl and prints were made through the windows of aeroplanes. These pieces are titled after the destination to which the artist, Michael Durand was travelling. They are quite abstract, allowing the viewer to form their own thoughts and feelings in response to the work.

Mediation

The launch of Medical 4 was documented by local press including the Munster Express, Waterford Today and the Waterford News and Star.
