Saoi

Artist Name(s) Seamus Kennedy
Artwork title Saoi
Description

Saoi (the Irish word for wisdom) is a work by artist Seamus Kennedy, commissioned by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council in 2005 under the Lumens project.

The Lumens project invited artists to make proposals considering ideas of light / illumination for the town of Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. Seamus Kennedy's proposal involved creating a temporary artwork sited close to the sea at Sandycove. The site is a very public space, frequented by walkers and has large numbers of people passing by on a daily basis. The work consisted of three hollow translucent fibreglass forms covered with sand, each contained floodlights and gel. The boulders along the shore of Dun Laoghaire have been a witness to the passing of time.

These silent, still forms hold secrets, and given the opportunity could tell many stories. In daylight Kennedy's boulders looked like they had been cast up from the shore and as dusk approached, and throughout the night, they came alive imparting information through illuminated text. At intervals, each boulder flashed with colour.
