Portrayals
Artist Name(s) | Jeanette Doyle |
Artwork title | Portrayals |
Context/Background | Portrayals is a project by artist Jeannette Doyle, commissioned by Breaking Ground, the Per Cent for Art programme for Ballymun Regeneration Limited and curated by Aisling Prior. There was no specific brief for this commission, but the artist was asked to consider issues pertinent to daily life in a community such as Ballymun, in the context of the major changes that are taking place there, and in the wider context of Ballymun as part of the capital city. Breaking Ground, the percent for art programme for Ballymun Regeneration Limited, was launched in Ballymun in February 2002 and completed in 2010. |
Description | Jeannette worked with women from The Star Project in Ballymun. The Star Project is a group of women who have stabilised their drug use and meet up on a daily basis. There were three strands of activity involved in the work, loosely connected by the notion of portrayal. From the beginning of the project the women produced drawings and collages portraying feelings and reflections about themselves and their environment. Over the course of the six months the group was also involved in preparations for portraits to be made later by Doyle. This preparation included access to relaxation classes, a beautician, a hairdresser, a photographer, a dress designer and her clothes. The third strand of portrayal was represented by video footage of the hands of members of the group engaged in a wide range of activities. |
Mediation | A catalogue was produced with essays by Rebecca Gordon Nesbitt and Mick Wilson. Articles were also published in the Sunday Tribune, 22 January 2006 and Village magazine. |
Biographies | Jeanette Doyle was born in Dublin and lives in Ireland. Her practice is primarily concerned with the interrogation of a variety of stances and modes of production. In recent years there has been a concentration on the painted image and its relationship to both lens based and digital technologies. |
