Inside-Outside is a public art collaborative project by artist Catherine Delaney commissioned for Wicklow County Council's Per Cent for Art Programme, 2007-2008.

An ephemeral based site-specific project in collaboration with six members of the community of Baltinglass town, the project explores the 'residue of place' in using and combining the history of the textile industry from the 1700's and in connecting this to the history and cultural cross-over of the different people who are now residing in the town today.

By using textile patterns that are either personally, culturally or geographically connected to a particular person, the artist has converted the negative from the positive pattern image of the textile sample, chosen by that person, and transferred this directly onto the street. This image is literally turned inside-out, creating a ghostly carpet pattern on the ground. Then gradually dur to the everyday use of the street and the wear, tear and wet weather, the carpet slowly disappears over time as the streets and pavements of Baltinglass town gathers fresh grime.

The project also includes an artist's book of photographic images of place and the various people of the towns connecting to the same place at different times in their lives. These include images taken by the artist from inside Saint Joseph's Convent, which is now lying derelict and soon to be demolished to make way for a new housing development in the town.

Imbued with a haunting sense of the past, the work traces the presence of a profound absence, preserving the memory of time and life passed by, emphasising the insignificant marks of the lived in space, reasserting our relationship between place and time, past and present.

Catherine Delaney was born in Dublin in 1965 and graduated from the NCAD in 1984. She continued her study in sculpture at the Johnson Atelier in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. She obtained a scholarship to continue and further her study in the Akademie Der Bildenden Kunste, Munich in Germany in 1986 for another two years in the field of sculpture and photography.

She had her first solo exhibition in the Project Arts Centre in 1994 entitled Rib By Rib. She was selected for EAST International in 1996 in the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich in the UK, by artists Richard Long and Roger Ackling for her large off-site installation of The Bridge which was installed in a disused Watermill in County Kilkenny. 

One of her most recent large scale public art works, commissioned by Breaking Ground for Ballymun Regeneration consisted of 2,500 square feet of the pooling of poured silver aluminium which had been cast and embedded into the ground.  She was elected to membership of Aosdana in 2008. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections in Ireland, the UK and the United States.

The project  engaged  six members of the community of Baltinglass.
