"…for peace comes dropping slow.."
Artist Name(s) | Lisa Vandegrift Davala |
Artwork title | "…for peace comes dropping slow.." |
Context/Background | In 2010 Sligo Arts Service delivered The Yeatsian Legacy Project, supported by the Peace III programme. The project was a comprehensive exploration of the work of W.B. and Jack B. Yeats and Sligo's influence on their work. This film was commissioned as part of the Yeatsian Legacy Project. |
Description | The poetic line “…for peace comes dropping slow” taken from the poem, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, was inscribed in light across the Sligo landscape at stunning locations and filmed to record its inscription. Various forms of light from natural to LED torches and mobile phones were used by ‘light writers’, with the final word SLOW, written collectively by members of the public from all over Ireland. The participants were living re-enactors of the words of W.B. Yeats, at the site of his inspiration on the shores of Lough Gill in a participative and meditative act captured on film. |

Biographies | Lisa Vandegrift Davala began her career as a mural painter, architectural restorer and sign writer, and has been a life-long musician. She was given the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Architecture and Design by Irish President Patrick Hillery. As a visual artist, she exhibited in galleries and museums in the US and Europe including Gimpel Fils London, Ducal Palace Leningrad, and The Berman Museum of Art (12-year retrospective exhibition). Since the 1980’s the major part of her attention has been given to the relationship between the marks we make and their ability to be containers of our human spirit. She has referred to this phenomenon as "The Calligraphy of the Spirit”. Her film “…for peace comes dropping slow…” is a celebration of this idea, bringing a human presence to a meaningful space, and inscribing it with the line and mark of poetic light. |
