Consultations and Observations

Artist Name(s) Michael Durand
Artwork title Consultations and Observations
Context/Background Consultations and Observations is an exhibition of archived photographs of Waterford city and County by Michael Durand on view in the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) Centre for Arts and Health. The work was commissioned by WHAT under the Per Cent for Arts Scheme. The WHAT Centre makes the artistic and educational resources of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust more easily accessible to the public, and supports the professional development of emerging and professional artists who choose to develop their practice in an Arts and Health context. It provides a space for use by outpatients and inpatients, staff, visitors, artists and the wider community that is not institutional in its ambiance or appearance, but is a centre that is conducive to artistic excellence.

The centre accommodates WHAT's participatory arts programme, research, training and information provision in the field of Arts and Health and art production and performance by professional artists. It contains a multi-use studio space which enables individuals and groups from Waterford Regional Hospital and the wider community to participate in the arts of all disciplines.

Waterford has a strong photographic record from the last century thanks to Poole, whose work is now housed in the National Photographic Archive in Dublin, and Annie Brophy. The affection for both these collections in Waterford illustrates the importance of photography as a means of recording our present and of speaking to future generations. This exhibition builds on the tradition of photo-documentation of a specific region as a means of celebrating the culture of a place, exploring the social and cultural changes in the area and providing a reference point for the Waterford diaspora.

Description

Artist Photographer Michael Durand produced photographs of his City and County of birth, Waterford, its people and places. This work is on permanent display in the new Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) Centre for Arts and Health.
The exhibition expanded the artist's usual focus on portraiture to include landscapes and architecture. From Cappoquin to Passage East, from the Lord Mayor to the laundry staff of Waterford Regional Hospital, the final body of work is a collection of over five hundred images and a comprehensive record of contemporary Waterford. It takes the form of a series of high-quality photographic prints and a collection of up to five hundred photographs which will be displayed on digital frames allowing for the ongoing evolution and rotation of imagery.
