Managing the commission
Managing a public art commission successfully is similar to managing other kinds of projects with contractual agreements, complex relationships, timelines and budgets. The difference is that it is a creative process and while it's crucial to deliver on time and in budget - an iterative process with flexibility may ensure the best results.
From the artist's perspective there can be negotiation with commissioners and sometimes audiences. As it is a collaborative process both artists and commissioners have responsibility from contractual stage to completion. Some people might think that once you appoint an artist the hard job is done, but reality proves that this is when things really start and it is important to be available for the artist through a supportive and engaged process. Difficulties that may emerge are likely to be confronted and sorted sooner. The process can be very enjoyable for all.
