| Context/Background | The Lir is the National Academy of Dramatic Art and trains young actors, designers, directors, playwrights, stage managers and theatre technicians to the highest international standards for careers in the theatre and allied professions. As part of its ambition the Lir Academy invited Alice Rekab to produce a new sculpture as part of a tri-annual public art commission. |
| Description | A large site-specific installation on the facade of the new Lir Academy building on Pearse St, Dublin 2 comprising of a series of bright green spheres and hemispheres which appear to be bubbling out from the building. “This sculpture speaks to the curious relationship between artistic brilliance and the academy, understanding The LIR Academy as a place not just for the development of skills but for the germination of talent. Each sphere suggests an egg, a unit of pure potential, like a kind of luminous creative excrescence that is supported by the building yet pushes the boundaries of its designated space, as it multiplies and climbs to the limit of the building’s parameters, stretching over the building’s edge, reaching upwards towards the sky. The work is lit sustainably and requires no electricity as it produces its light from a chemistry derived from natural non-toxic rare earth minerals.” Medium: Fiberglass Dimensions: 5m x 12m
