| Context/Background | Following the success of Fergal McCarthy’s ‘LiffeyTown’ installation for Dublin’s river Liffey the previous year, Dublin Fringe Festival commissioned Fergal McCarthy to devise another site-specific artwork for the Grand Canal Dock in 2011. |
| Description | No Man’s Land (2011) was a small, man-made island, created by Fergal McCarthy for Dublin’s Fringe Festival that year. Anchored west of The Samuel Beckett Bridge on the river Liffey, opposite a vacant building intended to be the headquarters of the former Anglo Irish Bank, the fake dessert island was a temporary home for the artist, who spent a week marooned there during the festival, with only basic supplies and a rudimentary tent for shelter. Materials: Barrels, wood, sand, resin, LED lights, batteries, 2 fake palm trees, tent, rope and anchors. Dimensions: Circular structure - diameter 10m; height 2.5m. |
| Mediation | No Man’s Land was reviewed by Aidan Dunne in The Irish Times. Gemma Tipton wrote a commissioned essay about the installation/performance which was printed in The Irish Times. Shane Hegarty, Arts Editor of The Irish Times wrote a feature article about the project. An image of the project was printed on the front page of The Sunday Times. No Man’s Land was featured on RTE News, and many other media outlets ran articles and interviews about the project. 'No Man's Land' won the Best Off-Site Production Award at the Fringe Festival Awards. The Irish Times produced a video documenting the work. Fergal McCarthy regularly updated his blog with details and documentation of the project as it unfolded. |
