Consultations and Observations
Artist Name(s) | Michael Durand |
Artwork title | Consultations and Observations |
Context/Background | Consultations and Observations is an exhibition of archived photographs of Waterford city and County by Michael Durand on view in the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) Centre for Arts and Health. The work was commissioned by WHAT under the Per Cent for Arts Scheme. The WHAT Centre makes the artistic and educational resources of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust more easily accessible to the public, and supports the professional development of emerging and professional artists who choose to develop their practice in an Arts and Health context. It provides a space for use by outpatients and inpatients, staff, visitors, artists and the wider community that is not institutional in its ambiance or appearance, but is a centre that is conducive to artistic excellence. The centre accommodates WHAT's participatory arts programme, research, training and information provision in the field of Arts and Health and art production and performance by professional artists. It contains a multi-use studio space which enables individuals and groups from Waterford Regional Hospital and the wider community to participate in the arts of all disciplines. Waterford has a strong photographic record from the last century thanks to Poole, whose work is now housed in the National Photographic Archive in Dublin, and Annie Brophy. The affection for both these collections in Waterford illustrates the importance of photography as a means of recording our present and of speaking to future generations. This exhibition builds on the tradition of photo-documentation of a specific region as a means of celebrating the culture of a place, exploring the social and cultural changes in the area and providing a reference point for the Waterford diaspora. |
