Colour Vortex

Artist Name(s) Allie Kay
Artwork title Colour Vortex
Description

The artwork consists of a large hand-dyed and printed silk installation, pieced and embellished with stitch, which is hung in the entrance area of the new school building for permanent display. Allie worked closely with the pupils at the school, creating textile artworks for them to keep and also dyed and sewn pieces which were incorporated in the finished artwork. The children enjoyed the experience end learnt new skills with Allie who was warmly welcomed by the principal and teachers during the workshops. Everyone was delighted to see the finished work, and the pupils particularly enjoyed finding their own pieces incorporated into the finished installation. The original concept for Colour Vortex was from Allie's first visit to the area where she noticed the geographic spread of the community, with houses and farms dispersed in the open countryside. Allie saw the school as a focal point for all the community, and wanted to reflect this in the artwork by bring together the teachers, pupils and wider community in the making of it.

It was a vibrant work, 1.6m in diameter, made of dyed and printed silks, pieced and embellished with stitch. A richly coloured and textured centre expands and opens to clearer, brighter edges. It was stretched on a metal frame and laquered to enhance the surface, and protect and provide for low maintenance.

There were three phases:
Phase 1- There were workshops with the children and their teachers. Silk fabrics would be tied, stitched and dyed for use in the finished piece. These techniques incorporate aspects of the curriculum and to emphasis this a small, secondary project is suggested for the older children where they dye cotton fabrics and make little bags, thus having a take-home piece of work. The second part of the school workshops will be where the children collected flowers, grasses, stones etc. which workshops will photograph together then upload into a graphic programme. The images will be manipulated to create interesting patterns and textures. These will be transfer printed onto areas of the dyed silks.

Phase 2 – This took place in the Community centre. She brought the finished fabrics and design for the completed work and spent a weekend starting to construct the piece. This was an open studio set- up where the community came to watch and discuss the project.

Phase 3 – Completed the work in her studio then the siting in the School.
