Writing

The way in which ideas are presented on paper is important, not only in articulating ideas, but also in giving insights into practice and the thinking behind the work.

  • Give yourself time to prepare a proposal.

  • Structure your proposal based on what is required.

  • Clarity is key to communicating your ideas quickly.

  • Opening statements / paragraphs are important.

  • Keep sentences and paragraphs short - make language easy to understand.

Keep in mind that there may be quite a few people reading your proposal all with different expertise and knowledge. Work at helping to maintain a quick sense of flow to your text, considering how you will allow space for articulating further or explaining complex ideas. It is always useful to get someone to read through your proposal, ask a peer to read the proposal for the artistic content, ask someone unrelated to the arts to read to check the concept has been clearly articulated and is easily understood.

Remember writing is a process - ideas come through this process.

Always leave time for editing and fine tuning.
